In the latest installment of Lizzy Byrd's story, we follow Lizzy to a curriculum committee meeting in which she has very little to say. And, in the end, she feels torn between the views of Mrs. Ratchet and Ms. N'Stock.
Based on what you have read in the NCTE and NWP documents, what do you think Lizzy should say in response to Ms. N'Stock's and Mrs. Ratchet's question?
Lizzy obviously needs to have done some research on the curriculum and standards to be able to reply to this conversation. I think that she let it go too far with letting personal issues become involved. She should have tried to have the two somehow work together to see what needed to be accomplished.
Lizzy needs to inform them that all of the types of writing they mentioned are necessary, even though they may not all be accomplished within one year. Students need to be able to learn how to write professionally, and also need to have a creative outlet to express themselves. She needs to tell both teachers that personal issues should be put aside and the focus should be solely on the students, not their own preferences to the curriculum.
Ahhh... I'm so lucky to have so much experience with classic girl bitchiness :)First of all. Never take sides. If you every say "I agree with _____" you lost.
Like Kayla said, research it on your own and come up with a completely new argument that you can support 100%. It may have elements that both teachers have but don't say that flat out. If they discover you said something that supports them, they think they won.
As Kayla said, both types of writing are necessary. I would say that a research paper and creative short story is necessary and many of the other types can be merged. Why not do a creative persuasive assignment and then make some of the other assignments shorter so you don't overwhelm anyone. Always back up the argument with standards so you can't be wrong.
